What to expect at your CO2 laser resurfacing appointment

Before going ahead with the CO2 Laser Resurfacing, a patch test and consultation will occur. Our skin specialist will discuss your concerns, lifestyle habits and skincare during this appointment. It is essential for us to understand when advising on the most suitable treatment and the expected number of treatments.

The best results are seen in those with a quality active skincare regime and a healthy lifestyle. The healthier you are the skin, the quicker the healing and results will be seen. Before starting the treatment, we will advise the most appropriate steps to ensure you get the best results.

All clients must use a mild skincare range we recommend for 1-2 weeks before the treatment. These products will not contain any forms of acids, exfoliants or retinol. Some clients may need a 2-4 week course of skincare before starting. This will be discussed during your consultation.

Every skin is beautiful and individual; following the consultation, a personal treatment plan will be created for your records. Images will be taken for our records to allow us to track your progress. You can see some CO2 Laser Resurfacing before and after pictures here.

During the treatment, you will lie comfortably on the treatment couch, where the procedure begins.

Your skin will be cleansed with a range of mild medical-grade skincare products. This will ensure that the skin is prepped, clean and bacteria-free. Once the skin is thoroughly cleansed, a layer of topical anaesthetic will be applied to the treatment area to ensure the treatment is as comfortable as possible once the topical anaesthetic has worked its magic, the treatment will begin.

Immediately afterwards, your skin will be warm, sensitive to the touch and appear firm and red, as though you have moderate sunburn. Our Norwich skin specialist will use our air coolant or ice rollers to cool the skin.

Once you are comfortable and our specialist is happy, a light moisturiser and SPF will be applied, and the treatment will be completed.

How it works

There are two different types of treatment.

The CO2 laser rejuvenation is more superficial. This is suitable for

mild ageing pigmentation; it is an excellent alternative to microneedling.

  • The downtime is 2-3 days, and results can be seen within a month.
  • This is from £325 and can be repeated every 4-6 weeks as required.

The CO2 skin resurfacing treatment is our most advanced resurfacing and requires a topical anaesthetic. This is suitable for deep lines, loose jowls, neck resurfacing and acne scarring.

  • The downtime is 7-14 days, and results can be seen within three months.
  • This is from £399 and can/may be repeated every three months as required.

This is by far our most popular treatment; the number of visits required depends on the concern.

THE TREATMENT:

Our medical-grade fractional CO2 laser in Norwich is a precision-focused laser treatment using a high-powered wavelength of 10,600nm in an array of laser beams.

As the laser scans across the skin, it penetrates the epidermis (outer layer of skin), creating micro-wounds that stimulate the natural production of new collagen, elastin and an amazing resurfacing of the outer layer of skin.

Every individual is different, and the effectiveness of the treatment will differ from person to person.

Unfortunately, we are unable to treat sensitive skin with conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis.

Other sensitive skin types may be treated but may require additional support with a specific skincare product range before starting the treatment.

Some darker skin Fitzpatrick’s can also be more challenging to treat because the skin contains more melanin. Melanin in some skin tones is stimulated by trauma to the skin; the fractional CO2 is an ablative laser that causes controlled skin trauma aiming to encourage collagen growth; due to this, it will stimulate pigment and cause pigmentation in some skin tones. In some cases, Fitzpatrick’s 1V may be suitable, but V and V1 are unsuitable for the treatment.

Dos & Don'ts

Pre-treatment

DO

  • Drink plenty of water to keep the skin hydrated .
  • Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF factor of 30-50 daily for 4 weeks.

DO NOT

  • Attend your appointment wearing makeup or fake tan.
  • Use any form of acid exfoliants and other products that may dry or irritate the skin for 72 hours post-treatment. The specific use of gentle products will be advised during your appointment.
  • Expose the area to sun or sun tanning beds for 2-4 weeks pre-treatment. The risk of hyper/hypo pigmentation (lightening or darkening of the skin) significantly increases with sun exposure. We recommend this indefinitely.
  • Attend your appointment with a self-tan or a tan two shades darker than your natural skin tone in the treatment area.
  • Take an anti-inflammatory or aspirin pain relief for 24-48 hours pre-treatment.
Post treatment

The post-treatment response will vary from client to client. This depends on the skin’s sensitivity.

The following are normal responses and can be expected for 5-7 days post-treatment.

  • Erythema (redness) and swelling.
  • Dry skin.
  • Firm and patchy areas of skin.
  • Light bleeding for 48 hours turning into dry skin/scabs.
  • Grid marks are present on the treatment area as a result of the laser fractionation.

DO

  • Drink plenty of water to keep the skin hydrated.
  • Gently cleanse the skin 3 times a day with plain, lukewarm water and the gentle gel cleanser provided by your skin specialist. This will begin the morning after the treatment.
  • After cleansing your face, please generously apply the provided post-recovery cream (creating a barrier).
  • Reapply the post-recovery as needed. Do not allow the treated area to dry out.
  • Swelling is typically a short-term response. Using a cold compress or ice pack will help relieve the swelling. Swelling is typically worst when you first wake up in the morning, especially around the eyes and mouth. (DO NOT APPLY ICE OR A COLD PRESS DIRECTLY ON THE SKIN, ensure there is a cover/barrier between)
  • Sleep with your head on pillows above your heart’s level.
  • Apply the provided broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of factor 30-50 daily (but not for the first 4 days)

DO NOT

  • SCRATCH, PICK OR RUB THE SKIN VIGOROUSLY.
  • Apply makeup for 7 days post-treatment.
  • Use any form of acid exfoliant, retinol and other products that may dry or irritate the skin for 4 weeks post-treatment. The specific use of gentle products will be advised during your appointment.
  • Undergo waxing, microdermabrasion, exfoliating facials or chemical peels on the treatment area for 3 months post-treatment.
  • Expose the area to sun or sun tanning beds for a minimum of 4 weeks or the course duration. The risk of hyper/hypo pigmentation (lightening or darkening of the skin) significantly increases with sun exposure. We recommend this indefinitely.
  • Shampoo directly on the treated area.
  • Use steam rooms, saunas, hot baths, showers, and swimming pools for 7 days post-treatment.
  • Undertake heavy exercise for 72 hours post-treatment.

Post-laser Skin Pinkness

Pinkness is the most common complaint of post-laser patients. Pinkness is a normal healing process and a sign of newly formed skin. Pinkness is highly variable and can last several weeks in some patients and several months in other patients. A general rule is that the longer the Pinkness, the better the result, as more collagen is being formed. However, when Pinkness is extreme or longer lasting than expected, it can be a sign of over-aggressive scrubbing, rubbing, or an irritating substance being applied.

CO2 Laser Resurfacing in Norwich - frequently asked questions

Before starting the CO2 laser resurfacing we numb the skin using a medical numbing such as emla numbing cream. We also use our specialist air coolant which blows up to -27 on the treatment area. This reduces redness, swelling and pain during the procedure.

CO2 laser resurfacing treatments in Norwich are amazing for acne scarring, mild pigmentation and ageing.

The treatment takes between 60-90 minutes

The results from CO2 laser resurfacing differ from person to person. When resurfacing skin where acne scarring is present, the results will be permanent.

When treating clients with pigmentation, future sun exposure and skin damage can stimulate new pigmentation.

When treating ageing we are stimulating collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, these diminish naturally over time, therefore, treatments may need to be repeated.

For some concerns, one treatment may achieve wonderful results, when treating other concerns such as scarring, 3-6 visits may be needed.

Our initial consultation lets us discuss the best plan for your needs. Book your consultation here!

The CO2 resurfacing is a very powerful treatment, we recommend avoiding other treatments for a minimum of 1 month before and after.

The treatment may be repeated 3-6 times depending on the concern being treated

Absolutely, the best treatment for acne scarring is CO2 laser resurfacing. It is an amazing alternative to microneedling and results will be achieved with fewer treatments, saving both time and money.

For many years we have treated acne scarring with microneedling, the CO2 laser resurfacing is the best treatment for acne scarring on the face.

In some cases, scarring can be a negative effect of the CO2 treatment, we use fractional CO2 a newer much safer technology than old-style CO2. We also have highly trained professionals using medical-grade machines. Scarring can be caused by errors of use, lack of experience, poor quality laser equipment and poor aftercare (aftercare not being followed).

Yes, we advised 7-14 days downtime where the skin will feel rough, sensitive and appear red/brown and scabbed. These are all normal and good signs of skin resurfacing.

We don’t advise CO2 resurfacing treatments to anyone who is pregnant, breastfeeding, taking strong prescription pain relief, has epilepsy, a heart condition or autoimmune disease or is taking specific skin medications.

If you are unsure if this treatment is suitable for you, book a Treatment Discovery Consultation so that we can discuss the best options for your skin.

The CO2 laser resurfacing is suitable for the face, neck and some small scars on the body.

We can not treat stretch marks or scars like red, raised or keloid scars.

The CO2 fractional laser is fantastic for fine lines and wrinkle treatment.

We have a safe medical-grade advanced machine at our Norwich Clinic.
